Atlantic Priory is hosting a fundraising dinner 18 November 2023 at the CFB Halifax Officers’ Wardroom.

Funds raised will be donated to Paws Fur Thought, a local service dog organization providing dogs to veterans and first responders suffering from PTSD.

Tickets are $150.00 with a $50.00 tax receipt issued. Tables (of 8) are $1200.00 with a $400.00 tax receipt.

Our Guest of Honour is Mr. Kevin Vickers ONB SC retired RCMP officer and former Canadian Ambassador to Ireland and former House of Commons Sergeant-at-Arms.

Kevin Vickers was appointed as the Ambassador of Canada to Ireland in January 2015. Following his term in Ireland he became the leader of the New Brunswick Liberal Party and now is retired. He has previously served as the Sergeant-at-Arms of the House of Commons. He studied at St. Francis Xavier University and the University of Calgary. Mr. Vickers had a successful 29-year-long career with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), attaining the rank of Chief Superintendent. With the RCMP, Mr. Vickers was called upon to successfully lead a number of high-profile investigations, including homicides, national criminal investigations and international drug importations. In his early career he conducted surveillance as part of the National Criminal Intelligence Section targeting organized crime figures in Hamilton, Ontario. In 2005 at the RCMP Headquarters in Ottawa, he led the Canadian police community in developing a National Strategy for the Protection of Children from Sexual Exploitation on the Internet. This initiative resulted in $45 million of funding and the creation of a National Centre of Expertise. 

Mr. Vickers was appointed Director of Security Operations for the House of Commons in June 2005. He was soon after appointed as Sergeant-at-Arms (August 2006-January 2015). There he was responsible for ensuring the security of the Parliamentary Precinct, and for operations that supported the functions of Parliament. Mr. Vickers was also responsible for leading the renovations of the parliamentary buildings. He was hailed as a hero by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Canada’s parliamentarians, and other prominent Canadian and international figures for his actions alongside RCMP and House of Commons security officers in stopping the October 2014 attack at the Parliament of Canada. He is a recipient of the Star of Courage, Order of New Brunswick, as well as the Queen’s Jubilee Medal and the Canada 125 Medal. He has been recognized by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration for his outstanding service in El Paso, Texas. Mr.Vickers was also officially recognized for his service to the Burnt Church first nations community during the fishery crisis in 2000.

Paws Fur Thought Facts

  • PFT is a volunteer driven organization that advocates and fundraises to pair service dogs with veterans suffering from PTSD. PFT was founded, in 2013, by Medric and Jocelyn Cousineau.
  •  PFT is a recognized service dog provider and supported by Wounded Warriors Canada 
  • PFT receives no funding or support from any level of government
  •  It takes between 13 to 18 months to train a puppy from birth to placement
  • PFT has paired over 85 service dogs from St John's to Vancouver Island but the majority of service teams are supported in Atlantic Canada
  • PFT, in 2023, has another 8 dogs under contract and in various stages of training
  • It takes approximately $15-20,000 to train the dog and the handler to the point of meeting Public Access Testing
  • PFT has been involved in many studies and committees to develop strategies to standardize service dog and provider requirements 
  • There is an estimated need for 2,500 service dogs in the veteran community
  • Currently qualified schools have a combined output of 100 dogs per annum
